About Mesa
Mesa has an interesting history that begins more than two thousand years ago with the appearance of the Hohokam people. A mysterious tribe of Native Americans. The Hohokam left behind a legacy of advanced technology and culture, including the miles of canals they created throughout the surrounding desert areas. Settlers arrived in the late 1800’s and were divided into two groups: the Mormon settlement created by Daniel Webster Jones in early 1877 and the First Mesa Company, which settled on the nearby mesa and restored many of the original canals to working order. The city was later incorporated in 1883, and was a major military installation throughout the early 20th century. Today, it is a thriving community that offers residents all the perks of small-town living, without sacrificing metropolitan amenities and luxuries. Located less than twenty-miles east of Phoenix, the city is the third largest in the State of Arizona and the 46th largest in the United States. With a population approaching half a million residents, many residents make their living in nearby aerospace companies and within the area’s large agricultural industry.
Living in Mesa
The city is divided into East and West Mesa. It encompasses a vast length of more than 18-miles across the two regions. A traditional grid-system, neighborhoods and subdivisions in each section have their own grocery stores, schools, shopping and dining. Additionally, both East and West areas are home to a number of excellent housing options. Some of the area’s more popular neighborhoods include Boulder Mountain, County Island, Hermosa Groves, Meridian Hills, Sky Mountain Estates, Thunder Mountain, Sunland Village, Red Mountain Ranch and more. When you choose to live here, you will find a community that seamlessly blends urban amenities with outdoor activities to provide residents with the best of both worlds. From golf resorts to rugged recreational areas, museums to modern art galleries, all this and more can be yours. When you pair this with stunning mountain landscapes and more than 325 days of sunshine each year (more than San Diego or Miami Beach), it is easy to see why so many call this home.
Schools, Health and Transportation
Known for being home to some of the area’s top-ranking schools including, Franklin Elementary, Franklin Northeast, and Hale Elementary. Many families with children choose the Mesa Public School District.
Also home to several world-class hospitals including the Banner Heart Hospital, the Arizona Regional Medical Center, and Phoenix Children’s Specialty and Urgent Care East Valley Center, a 30,000-square foot facility that is home to some of the most updated technology and services exclusively for pediatric care.
Known for being a commuter city, traveling to and from is a breeze with direct access to U.S. Route 60, State Route 87, Loop 101, and Loop 202 directly from the city. The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is also located here.
Parks and Recreation
The city of Mesa is home to more than fifty parks and green spaces that offer everything from playgrounds to barbeques, basketball courts, volleyball, hiking and biking trails, and more. Additionally, the surrounding mountains and trails are just a short drive away for Mesa residents. With seemingly endless sunshine, golf courses are also popular in the Mesa area. Some of the most popular golf courses include Dobson Ranch Golf Course, Painted Mountain Golf Resort, and Longbow Golf Course to name just a few.
Despite being in the heart of the desert, residents can also take advantage of the city’s close proximity to water recreation. There are three lakes and two rivers within 30-minutes of Mesa that are popular for boating, fishing, rafting, kayaking, skiing, and more. Options include Apache Lake, Canyon Lake, Roosevelt Lake, Saguaro Lake, and Salt River. Salt River, the closest to Mesa, winds through the Tonto National Forest and is one of the most popular leisure recreation destinations in the city.
Shopping and Dining
There is no shortage of shopping and dining opportunities, with many retail centers throughout the city. The upscale shops of Dana Park Village Square, a 400,000-square foot lifestyle center, are the perfect example of Mesa luxury living at its finest. Boasting some of the nation’s finest retailers, shoppers will find spacious patios for dining al fresco, wide pedestrian walkways, and beautiful palm-tree-lined driveways. Other shopping and dining options can be found at Power Square Mall, Superstition Springs Center, Fiesta Mall and Mesa Riverview.
