About Ahwatukee
Positioned just fifteen minutes from Phoenix, Ahwatukee is one of the fifteen urban villages that make up the

greater Phoenix area.  Home to approximately 85,000 residents, Ahwatukee offers the amenities of a big-city, while presenting an intimate ambiance and incredible natural surrounding.
Jokingly referred to as the “world’s largest cul-de-sac” due to its L-shape, is bordered on the north by South Mountain Park and Guadalupe Road. On the east is Interstate 10 and the cities of Chandler, Guadalupe and Tempe.  The Gila River Indian Reservation to the south makes up the cities last border.  In essence, the community is a large peninsula, taking up more than 35-square miles, with access only on the east. This unique landscape provides its residents with a deep sense of privacy and a small-town feel that is found in very few places across the Phoenix Valley.

History
In addition to its unique placement, Ahwatukee also has a unique history.  Legend has it, in 1921 Dr. and Mrs. W.V.B. Ames built a home outside of Phoenix in the foothills of South Mountain, and named this area “Casa de Suenos”, or “house of dreams.” Three months after moving in, Dr Ames died.  In 1933 the house and most of the land was willed to St. Luke’s Hospital.  In 1935, Helen Brinton fell in love with the Ames’ home, purchased it, and mistranslated the name from Spanish to Crow as “Ahwatukee.”  Interestingly, the closest approximation in Crow is actually Awe chuuka, meaning “land on the other side of the hill” or “land in the next valley”.  Most importantly, however, her intention remains and the name continues to evoke awe and mystery of the landscape itself.   In 1971, part of the land was purchased, subdivided, and developed into an HOA by the Presley Development Company.  Ahwatukee has grown as Phoenix acquired other land parcels to the west, including land owned by International Harvester.

Living in Ahwatukee
In 2002, Money Magazine named Ahwatukee as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the country.  Offering unparalleled quality of life, quiet neighborhoods, wonderful schools, excellent proximity to shopping and dining, numerous golf courses, pristine parks and a myriad of recreational pursuits, it is easy to understand why Ahwatukee would receive such an honor.  While the city is somewhat isolated from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix, all the amenities and attractions of the big-city are just a short drive away.

Schools, Health and Transportation
A major draw to this area for residents continues to be the school system.  The Kyrene School District, is one of the top performing districts in the state. All schools within this district have received excellent ratings for academic achievement, including the two high schools that are part of the Tempe Union High School District. Parents who prefer private or charter schools will also find numerous options in Ahwatukee.  Furthermore, colleges and universities in the immediate area include: Arizona State University and a handful of community colleges.

For your health – The Chandler Regional Hospital, Arrowhead Hospital, Arizona Heart Hospital, and Tempe Saint Luke’s Hospital are just a few of the excellent medical facilities which support Ahwatukee.

Local transportation in the area is made easy via the Phoenix ALEX, operated by Valley Metro, which goes as far north as Elliot Road and 51st Street (Ahwatukee Country Club) and as far west as 12th Street and Liberty Lane.  ALEX also services 10 area schools.  Plus Sky Harbor International Airport is a few minutes away.

south-mountainParks and Recreation
Ahwatukee and the surrounding Phoenix Valley communities are privileged to experience unparalleled year-round weather.  This makes enjoying the community’s numerous parks and recreation areas enjoyable throughout the year.  Many of the subdivisions are intertwined with the beautiful South Mountain Foothills, and with the South Mountain Park itself.  Offering more than fifty miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, this park is the largest municipal park in the country.  Other parks include Desert Foothills Park, Sun Ray Park, Vista Canyon, and Mountain Vista Park, which offer a number of attractions including athletic fields, swimming pools, playgrounds, a skate park, and an off-leash dog park. The Ahwatukee Recreation Center and the Ahwatukee Community Center offer additional programs and activities throughout the year.   This city also boasts four golf courses – the Ahwatukee Country Club, Ahwatukee Lakes, Foothills Golf Club, and Foothills Club West – that offer residents and visitors world-class golf facilities surrounded by incredible landscape and vistas.

Shopping and Dining
Residents are presented with a number of shopping and dining options ranging from quaint boutiques and local restaurants to big-box retailers and chain restaurants. There are also a number of great malls and shopping centers in the immediate area including the Arizona Center, Casa Paloma, and Biltmore Fashion Park, which feature notable retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Williams-Sonora, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and more.
