Sun City

About Sun City

Sun City was opened January 1, 1960, with five home models, a shopping center, a recreation center, and a golf course. This was the first active retirement community in the United States.  It and its adjoining sister city, Sun City West. are both popular retirement communities with  snowbirds.  With more than 120 clubs, eight golf courses, seven recreation centers, two bowling centers, and the entire Valley of the Sun at your doorstep, life is truly abundant here. Hike, bike, ride, swim, spin, sew, dance, weave, sing, run, play…live and learn. There’s nothing you can’t do here.

Sun City

History

The opening weekend (January 1, 1960) drew 100,000 people, ten times more than expected.   A month before the grand opening, the development still did not have a name, however that was by design. The Webb Construction Company, to ramp up publicity, had sponsored a nationwide contest to name the community. An ad was placed in the Saturday Evening Post, awarding a new home to the winner.  Del Webb, the owner of Webb Construction Company was featured on the cover of the Time magazine on August 3, 1962. A five page article on Del Webb, his company and Sun City were in the magazine.   Photograph were by Bob McColley.

The retirement community was built on the site of the former ghost town of Marinette.  Developer Del E. Webb expanded Sun City over the years, and built other retirement communities in the Sun BeltSun City West was built in the late 1970s, Sun City Grand in the late 1990s, Sun City Anthem in 1999, and Sun City Festival in July 2006.   The community is well known to law students, as it is featured in the case Spur Industries v. Del E. Webb Development Co., 494 P.2d 700 (Ariz. 1972), commonly used in first-year property law courses to illustrate nuisance law.
