About Surprise

Surprise, AZ Stadium

Surprise, Arizona is located on the northwest edge of greater Phoenix in Maricopa County’s “Valley of the Sun,” and is a scenic and rapidly growing city. In the last decade alone, Surprise’s population grew from just more than 30,000 residents to more than 117,000 in 2012.

With an approximately 281% growth rate, this makes Sunrise Arizona’s 10th largest city. Home to the West Valley Art Museum and the spring training home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers, residents turn to Surprise for its pristine natural surroundings, quality new construction, and wealth of vibrant activities and amenities.

Incorporated in 1960, Surprise’s history dates back to 1938 when Flora Mae Statler founded the city with little more than a few homes and a gas station. The community began to flourish when Sun City Grand, a Del Webb senior retirement community was built and tens of thousands of retirees moved in.

Rapid and phenomenal growth occurred, much of which is attributed to Surprise’s close proximity to this land development. Today, Surprise sits approximately five-miles northwest of the original Sun City site and next to Sun City West.
